I've read the endless debates about wether or not spiral rifling is good for PB use or not, but does anyone in town actually own a sprial rifled barrel? I'd love to try one before I purchased one. Or has anyone around even tried one? I can see both sides of the arguement theoreticly, but in practice is all that matters.

no I have never used one but I would stay as far away from one as possible. I read an article from the owner of either Lapco or Palmer Pursuit and they talked about how they designed the rifled barrels and how they just were not any good for paintballs and even the military wanted information on it, but in the end through extensive testing they decided it just wasn't effective. Please don't get one, get a nice barrel with a bore size of either .689 or .691.

I already have a Lapco AutoSpirit (.687) and a JJ Ceramic (.688-.691). I'm just always looking for any extra edge up or just something interesting to check out.

I don't suppose you know where you found that owner written review? Course I'm always somewhat skeptical of "owner" reviews that don't appear on the company website. After all, I could write an "owner" review & post it if I wanted to. Unfortunately the net sucks that way.

I've read reviews & arguments that go both ways. Actually it usually seems like people who have used them usually favor them & those who haven't tried them argue against them. But a lot of what I have heard sounds like people from both sides are talking out of their ass.
But, then there are companies that exclusively make spiral rifled barrels, like HammerHead & Armson.
The one consistent thing I have heard is that they don't "self-clean" well. But that I'm not very concerned with. I don't remember the last ball break I had with vaguely decent paint.

So basically I want to see for myself.

if I get a chance I'll look to where I found that article. The thing with rifling is that paintballs are not a solid mass, they have the paint inside the shell along with air bubbles so when spin is introduced the flight pattern is scewed because the ball's center of gravity changes. As for their claims about accuracy I would be curious what paint they used because they do not mention, it could be a reball or some other solid practice paint. One downside to rifled barrels is that more air escapes down the rifled grooves making them less air effecient.

I've used both before with an automag. I have found that rifled barrels were better at longer ranges. I'm not going to say that a non-rifled would have missed, but I have had good hit rates at long ranges when i have used an armison rifled barrel on my Mag. The battle will always rage and I personally just view barrels as barrels regardless of rifiling. On top of the whole liquid arguement, a sphere is poorly designed for air flight due to the turbulance that is created. This creates very disruptive high and low pressure areas around the paintball. Claims that barrels can increase accuracy, distance,. . . I think are often Hype to sell products. In the end you are talking about a sphere filled with liquid, fired with air pressure, that has minute, but very influential, seams and imperfections, that can be greatly affected by such enivironmental factors as: humidity, temperature, wind speed, wind direction.... In the end I think it is wholly a matter of finding the barrel that you PERSONALLY feels works best with your gun, playing style, and conditions...

I used to use a 4 inch brassy barrel as my primary because I NEVER had to worry about ball breaks....:D
